Diagnostics and Estimates

Why do mechanics charge for diagnosis of my car’s problems? Frequently people ask why I charge to figure out what’s wrong with their car when they are going to pay to have it fixed anyway. As a veteran mechanic with over 30 years of experience repairing cars, this question still takes me by surprise.

Have you ever taken a good look under the hood of your car? Today’s autos are amazingly complex machines. Ask any old time shade tree mechanic how often he works on his car these days and you’re likely to see a slow shaking of the head and a look of dismay.

Sure, he may be able to change the oil, perhaps the spark plugs or brakes. But solving the mystery of a slight miss, or a strange noise or oil leak is out of the question. Even for a well-trained mechanic, troubleshooting your car’s problem is a time consuming challenge. Like every other professional you deal with, time is money for a good mechanic. Also consider that less experienced mechanics will simply start switching out parts in the hope of finding a cure for your car’s woes. Car parts are not cheap!

So you have a choice, you can throw money at the problem with an inexperienced mechanic, never really knowing if the problem with your car is solved or what you bought that you didn’t need. Or you can pay someone who is knowledgeable to do the troubleshooting and figure out exactly what’s wrong and repair it!

“I arrived a little early for my appointment yesterday and saw the owner, Alan Bowers, go out of his way to help two different customers save money on their repairs. It makes me feel good when I see a business owner put their customer before them self and do what is genuinely the right thing. I will keep taking my cars to Alan Bowers at Wyoming Service Center for service.”

Let me start by saying that I am a mechanic. I’ve wrenched on cars and motorcycles since I was 8 years old. Sometimes I get busy or just run into a job that I don’t have the energy for. When this happens, I go to the Wyoming Service Center and let Alan handle it. I’ve used Alan for about 20 years now. I go there because he is an excellent mechanic, something that is hard to find these days. He’ll get it right the first time. Whenever I have a friend who needs car repair I always send them to the Wyoming Service Center because I know Alan will do them right!
